Just breath 2020
[Concrete, speakers, audio loop 8ā, 30x20x8cm]
I conceived this piece as an analogy to life. After extensive research into breathing empirically, theoretically, and through my body. Trying different methods of breathing, among them the Buteyko, Box breathing, Yogic Breathing, like for example, those found in the Sudarshan Kriya and Kundalini yoga (sa ta na ma), Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril).
Inside the small piece of concrete was a loudspeaker with the audio of my breathing for 8 minutes on a loop. I wanted to show a work that, by itself, will be in a meditative state. But I realized that this was entering into a paradox: I have nothing to say and Iām saying it (J.Cage). The contradictions that the physical and social structures we build as humans lead us. A quest to get closer to our nature, to what keeps us in this channel called life.
The sound of breathing, the breath, surpasses the concrete object, questioning the extent to which our breath or existence can transcend materiality.
Furthermore, exploring the horizontal interrelation between matter and sound is essential for our understanding of evolution. It points towards a flat ontology of matter, perhaps even a form of animism.
